David Gostick, Conductor

The Society was very pleased to welcome David Gostick as Musical Director in September 2016 when Will Dawes left to further his successful international singing career.

David began his studies with an organ scholarship at Southwell Minster, then at Pembroke College, Oxford, and went on to study orchestral conducting. As well as Bath Choral Society, he also conducts the Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir, one of the south's leading chamber choirs, who have a strong reputation for contemporary music. They have recorded two CDs and have appeared on Radios 3 and 4.

David also directs the music at Wimborne Minster, where cathedral-style music is maintained by a traditional choir of men and children. The choir sings three services each Sunday, and regularly performs with the Minster's professional instrumental ensemble. Their repertoire ranges from the 14th century to new commissions, and includes a wide range of music from the baroque and classical periods. Music from the 17th century handwritten partbooks in the Minster's Chained Library is also featured.

In the field of opera, David works with several companies as a conductor, repetiteur and chorus master. He is Head of Music at Co-Opera Co, for whom he has conducted Britten A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mozart The Magic Flute and Puccini La Boheme; He has also conducted for Dorset Productions and OperaUpClose. David also conducts the Portsmouth Choral Union, a 150 strong auditioned choir. He is a frequent guest conductor with the Medici Choir, the Brandenburg Sinfonia and the Bournemouth Philharmonic. He also has a strong presence in music education as a teacher and an examiner for ABRSM.
