Winner of both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2009 London Handel Festival Singing Competition, Ruby Hughes studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Munich, and the Royal College of Music, London, graduating in Summer 2009. She made her debut at the Theater an der Wien in October 2009 singing Roggiero / Tancredi under René Jacobs, returning as Fortuna / L'Incoronazione di Poppea.
She sang Rose Maurrant in The Opera Group's award-winning production of Street Scene, a role she repeated with the Opéra de Toulon. Other companies with whom she has worked include the Classical Opera Company, the Early Opera Company, Der Lautten Compagney, Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sansoucci, Musikwerkstatt Wien and Potsdamer Winteroper.
Concert engagements have included performances with the Academy of Ancient Music, the Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin, the Barockorchester Stuttgart, the BBC Concert Orchestra, Cappella Amsterdam, Le Concert Lorrain, Huddersfield Choral Society, the London Mozart Players, the Manchester Camerata, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Musica Saeculorum, Das Neue Orchester, the OAE, the Philharmonia and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Conductors with whom she has worked include Freider Bernius, Olof Boman, Stephen Cleobury, Laurence Cummings, Christian Curnyn, Pablo-Heras-Casado, Wolfgang Katschner, Marc Minkowski, Daniel Reuss, Ian Page, Andreas Spering, Christoph Spering, Stephan Schultz, Johannes Wildner and Takuo Yuasa.
Festival engagements have included Cheltenham, Eisenstadt, Göttingen and Nuremberg, and broadcasts include Bach Christmas Cantatas (SR2), Barber Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (BBC), Handel 250th Anniversary Concert (RTÉ Lyric fM, broadcast to the EU), Messiah (ORF), Saul (Radio France) and Philemon und Baucis (Deutschlandradio Kultur).
Current engagements include Sir Jonathan Miller's production of the St Matthew Passion at London's Royal National Theatre, Michal / Saul at the Buxton Festival with Harry Christophers, Minerva / The Return of Ulysses for English National Opera, projects with Arte dei Suonatori, Les Bijoux Indiscrets, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the OAE, the RLPO, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and a recital with Julius Drake for Pollok House Arts Society in Glasgow.
