A former choral scholar of King's College, Cambridge, Samuel Evans (bass) graduated with distinction from the post-graduate course at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with Philip Doghan. He has performed the rôles of Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) in Cambridge; Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) at Sedgwick Park, Sussex; Mr. Peachum (Beggar's Opera) at the Handel House Museum; Leporello (Don Giovanni) for Opera-by-Definition in the Trinity Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, and has taken rôles in four short operas by Ned Rorem at the Bridewell Theatre, London. He has performed excerpts from Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro and Billy Budd in the title roles at the R.A.M, and has participated in masterclasses with Dennis O'Neill and Thomas Quasthoff.
Recent solo concert engagements have included Bach Mass in B minor in London, Italy, Spain and Germany with the English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Elgar The Kingdom in the Brighton Fringe Festival, Monteverdi Vespers in Southwark Cathedral, Mozart Requiem in St Martin-in-the-Fields, Handel Messiah in Blackheath Concert Halls, Handel Samson in Canterbury Cathedral, Fauré Requiem for Highgate Choral Society, Haydn Nelson Mass for the Portsmouth Choral Union, and the roles of Centurion and Nicodemus in the U.K. premiere of Francis Grier's The Passion of Jesus of Nazareth, under Stephen Cleobury and broadcast live from King's College chapel on BBC Radio 3.
He features as a soloist on the recent Monteverdi Choir recording of music of the Spanish Renaissance, and on the acclaimed Cambridge Singers recording of the choral music of Richard Rodney Bennett. He is the grateful recipient of a Music Education Award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, and enjoys the generous support of the Josephine Baker Trust.
